OUR SNOWPACK IS SHRINKING

Colorado’s snowpack is shrinking, threatening a vital water source when our state already struggles with drought and water scarcity.“Rocky Mountain snowpack has been declining over the past century but the shrink has accelerated in recent years due to warming trends” (Denver Post; 11/19/23).

IT'S HAPPENING IN COLORADO

Colorado is already seeing the negative impacts of climate change. “Since 2018, the Southwest — which includes Colorado — has weathered 31 large climate-related disasters…. The disasters in Colorado include the 2021 Marshall fire in Boulder County, ongoing severe drought and dangerous hail storms, like the one that injured concertgoers at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in June.” (Denver Post; 11/19/23)

Colorado is experiencing a year-round fire season with more severe wildfires. “The three largest wildfires in Colorado’s history occurred in 2020” (Denver Post; 11/19/23).

2023 THE WARMEST YEAR ON RECORD

2023 was the warmest year on record (World Meteorological Organization). “At the current rate of warming, global temperatures will inevitably exceed preindustrial values by 1.5 degree Celsius around 2026, instead of in the year 2100, the goal set eight years ago at COP21 in Paris.” (Smithsonian Magazine, 12/22/2023).
